In a small space like an apartment, it can be difficult to narrow down all of your ideas on how to go about decorating it. You have to be careful and aware of what furniture pieces to buy, what colors to paint your walls, and what accessories to weave throughout your official space. While you want to make the apartment homey, you also don’t want to clutter it up or have too much going on to the point where it doesn’t look or feel comfortable.

Decorating any home, but an apartment, in particular, is all about utilizing your space to the best of your ability. Some people sacrifice bulky furniture pieces for a better feng shui, while others get creative with unique gadgets hidden in walls or other spaces. One way to expand the size of your apartment while decorating it is by using mirrors! You may be thinking, that’s crazy, there’s no way- but believe it or not, mirrors give your apartment the illusion of being bigger without the extra rent money. Are you currently living in an apartment? Are you unsure of how to make the most of your space and decorate it smartly? Check out these 5 easy ways to decorate your apartment with mirrors, not only will it make your space look larger, but also give it a polished and sophisticated look!

1. Take Advantage of Natural Light: In an apartment, taking advantage of natural light is a great way to open up the space in general, but when you incorporate mirrors into that, it completely changes the game!

When decorating your apartment, place a mirror, whatever size of your choice, in front of a window. Doing this will reflect the outside, making your space look bigger while also reflecting the sunshine to add brightness to your space and boost your mood. Who doesn’t love a good illusion and being happy? Thanks, mirrors!

2. Go Big or Go Home: Generally speaking, I think a lot of us can be scared of decorating with mirrors because we don’t know how to. With mirrors, there are so many choices in terms of size, color, and style, that it can be overwhelming to pick one.

Because of this, many people settle with just getting a plain, boring mirror that doesn’t necessarily fit their style or personality. Don’t lose sight of who you are while decorating your apartment- if you like big, go big with a mirror! Adding a large, floor-length mirror to your living area or even your bedroom can make it seem bigger.

Lindsey Smith of ApartmentGuide.com comments on this, stating, “When decorating with mirrors, there’s really no such thing as too big. The bigger your mirror, the more of the room it reflects, and the bigger your room looks. So, really, big mirrors are a great option.”

3. Broaden Narrow Spaces: There are plenty of spaces in apartments that are particularly narrow, and if you live in a city, I’m sure you can attest to this. Living in a narrow apartment can seem cramped and leave you feeling claustrophobic whenever you try to decorate it. However, adding mirrors to narrow spaces can give the illusion that the space is broader and less cramped. Try adding a medium-sized mirror at the end of a narrow hallway or in your bathroom to make it feel more airy and spacious.

4. Consider the Entryway: It is typical for a lot of people to have mirrors in the entryways of their homes and apartments. The addition of a mirror in an entryway can make people feel welcome, due to the fact that the reflected light makes the space brighter and bigger looking.

5. Create a Mirror Wall: I know what you may be thinking, “Ok, I’m looking for my apartment to seem bigger, not to look like a fun house!” I understand, a gallery of mirrors or a wall exclusively dedicated to mirrors sounds scary. However, if you are a more creative person, I urge you to try this trick! Simply use a few small mirrors and line them up nicely to get a chic and expanded feel to your apartment.

Leah Moss of ApartmentTherapy.com offers her suggestions, stating “In my opinion the key is using multiple similar small mirrors (in the same way you would use picture paneling), using large panels of antiqued mirrors (this breaks up the reflection and reads almost more like art than mirror), or framing the mirror with trim.”
