How to Find Babysitting Jobs Near Campus

By Kaitlin Hurtado on January 15, 2020

College can be quite the financial burden. There’s tuition fees, textbooks, rent, car payments – not to mention all the expenses that come up from you maintaining your social life. One of the ways you can combat that financial burden is to get a job during your college years – whether it be a barista at a campus coffee shop or getting a job in retail, finding a part-time job is a near necessity for many college students. Another popular job among college students is babysitting. Depending on what kind of job you get yourself into – you can get a part-time job that is somewhat flexible, close to campus, and where you can get a better handle on workplace conditions.

If you are wondering how to go about looking for babysitting jobs near campus, here are few tips to help you on getting started:

Join a local group on Facebook

Facebook groups and community pages can be the perfect place to seek out babysitting jobs near campus. The more localized you can get, the more likely you can find a job close to campus with minimal hassle. Start with the town you are living with – it should be fairly easy to track down a page where anyone in the community can join and post. Many people post odd jobs, news, items listings. You can do a quick search to see if any community member recently posted about looking for a babysitter, narrowing down the posts you have to sit and sift through. If you don’t happen to find any at first glance – have no fear, take matters into your own hands.

As a community member or group member, you will most likely have access and be able to post to the group’s page. Write a quick, to-the-point summary about the babysitting opportunity you are looking for. If you have any qualifications, be sure to list them! You shouldn’t be posted your entire resume, but you also shouldn’t just leave the post at “I’m looking for a babysitting job in the area, anyone hiring?” If you’re lost on the type of the information you should include in the post, consider these bits of information if they pertain to you:

  • Languages. If you can speak more than one language, it can prove very helpful for a babysitting gig. If parents are looking for their kid(s) to practice a foreign language at home, or even keep up what their family speaks in with their babysitter, you will have a better chance at catching a parent’s eye with your post.
  • Possible experience. This may seem like a given, but make sure to include any experience you have babysitting. Mention that you can provide reference numbers of past clients if possible!
  • Transportation. Sometimes parents will want their kids to be picked up from school, driven to practice or a tutor, and if you have a car and are willing to drive them around, it can be a definite advantage.
Look online — apps or websites are aplenty
Not the biggest fan of social media or Facebook community pages, you can still look online! Apps are specialized for the sole reason of connecting babysitters to parents in need, kind of like how Uber and Lyft do it for ridesharing. Apps like Sitter or SitterCity may be your next go-to option when it comes to looking for babysitting jobs near campus.

Take advantage of where you live

If you live in an off-campus apartment or house, you may be in luck. Your potential babysitting gig can be a one-minute walk away. If you live in an apartment, it might be a bit easier to network with your neighbors. Your leasing office may put out community notices up in their office through a bulletin board, or throughout common areas in the community: laundry rooms, gyms, lounges, you name it. If residents are allowed to add their own notices, be sure you are still complying with any possible guidelines they may have for posters. Or, you can get lucky and stumble across someone else’s post asking for a babysitter.

If your leasing office has a resident portal that has something like a community board where people can post about community news, if they are selling personal items…or looking for a babysitter, don’t hesitate to take advantage of it!

If you happen to be more friendly with your neighbors with kids, just be honest and ask them if they are looking for a possible babysitter. Even if they aren’t looking for a babysitter at the moment, it doesn’t hurt to exchange contact information. Who knows – they may call on you when something pops up or pass on your information to friends and coworkers that are actively seeking out a babysitter.
