Middlebury Russian Program in Kazakhstan
Middleburys Russian language immersion programs in Almaty and Astana, Kazakhstan, are designed for students with an intermediate level of Russian, typically equivalent to at least two years of college-level study. Through the Middlebury Language Pledge, participants commit to speaking only Russian throughout their semester or year abroad, creating the optimal conditions for linguistic and cultural immersion.
Students enroll in advanced Russian language courses and Middlebury-organized electives, while also having the opportunity to take mainstream courses alongside local students. Depending on their program location, participants may study at Maqsut Narikbayev University or Eurasian National University in Astana, or at Abai University in Almaty. These academic experiences provide valuable opportunities to strengthen language proficiency while engaging directly with Kazakhstani university life.
By combining rigorous coursework with daily interaction in Russian-speaking environments, the program enables students to deepen their language skills, broaden their cultural understanding, and gain firsthand experience of contemporary life in Kazakhstan.
